Construction Detail:

When deciding to build a new boat designed more than half a century ago, the builder will be forced to decide how best to preserve the classic personality of a vessel whilst embracing modern techniques where they can add strength or reduce maintenance cost.

Our build of "Prima" incorporates a few modifications from the original lines. These changes were essential to make "Prima" appeal to modern sailors whilst not detracting from her beautiful hull form and traditional character. We hope that once complete, others feel the same.

"Prima's" hull is carvel planked using African Mahogany (Khaya) on steamed Oak timbers. All fastenings are copper and bronze. For added strength laminated Iroko has been used for stem and floors. Though subtle, the curved transom is a signature element of the design therefore time was taken to create it out of vacuum laminated marine ply.

The area of biggest change has been in the rig and sail plan. The primary objective was to eliminate the need for a boomkin or running backstays.

The result is a slightly higher aspect ratio sail plan with an area of approximately 305 sq.ft. The updated arrangement allows the placement of twin backstays on the afterdeck with plenty of clearance around the end of the boom to reduce the likelihood of fouling the main or its running rigging.

The mast is a hollow spar produced in douglas fir and will be keel-stepped as in the original lines. All spar and deck fittings are bronze.

The main sail is no longer loose-footed and will be fixed to the mast and boom using tracks and slides. A roller-reefing genoa will also be supplied. The sails were designed and sewn by Rowsell Sails (Exmouth, Devon) in a canvass-like cream colour, UV protected, high performance polyester (similar to Dacron®).

The keel is cast in lead at approximately 1.1 metric tons. The weight has been increased slightly based on Harrison Butler's comments in "Cruising Yachts" and should serve to counter-balance the slightly taller rig.

Prima will be supplied with a Yanmar 1GM10, 9 Hp diesel engine. Contrary to Harrison Butler's construction plan, which showed a wing installation, the shaft will exit on the center line for improved maneuverability.

"Prima" is a speculation build and we are currently seeking a buyer. At this stage the buyer has the oportunity to customize the interior accomodation to suit. If you are interested in discussing terms of purchase, please contact us.
