Iain Oughtred's Wee Seal MK II is a pocket cruiser designed for weekend cruising and exploring. The design shows strong traditional influences combined with durable modern wood/epoxy construction.
The small size and shallow draft make the Wee Seal ideal for trailer sailing giving the owner flexibility to explore a wide range of destinations.
With plenty of reserve buoyancy, the added waterline length in the Scandinavian double-ender hull form and the inclusion of a lead ballast keel, should make the Wee Seal comfortable and seakindly in any weather.

Build Options:
Traditional Construction - Although designed for glued lap ply construction, the Wee Seal could be easily adapted for traditional clinker planking and construction.
Laminated Timber - The original specification calls for solid timber stems, floors and beams. Laminating curved members allows the boatbuilder to reproduce an exact curve without cutting across grain. This reduces the chance of timber splitting out under load or on impact. Laminated beams are also very attractive when bright finished.
Outboard Well - To accommodate an outboard engine, a well can be placed through the aft bulkhead and buoyancy compartment. In our adaptation, we have created a large hatch in the aft deck to allow stowage of the engine in the aft locker whilst under sail.
Forward Hatch - Oughtred's design includes an optional hatch in the foredeck. This would improve air flow through the hull, but does reduce space on the foredeck.
Self-draining Cockpit - Both a self-draining and open cockpit arrangement are available. The open cockpit is deeper and a bit more spacious. The self-draining design gives you more enclosed storage and of course drier feet.
Finish and Materials - Whether you prefer simple or luxurious, we will work with your aesthetic preferences and budgetary requirements to select the best suited finish and materials for your project.
Sailing Rig - In addition to the Gunter Sloop rig pictured above, Iain Oughtred has drawn up a Yawl rig. The smaller individual sails of the Yawl will be easier to handle, and the addition of a mizzen adds stability and power if the main is dropped in high wind conditions.
Part-builds - The Wee Seal can be commissioned at any stage of build from the planked hull onwards. If you fancy a bit of DIY, we can supply you with the materials and fittings necessary to complete your project. And, we will always be available for help and advice.
Trailer and Outboard - We can provide custom built trailers and outboards to complete the package.

The pictured Wee Seal was constructed from Robbins Super-Elite marine plywood, over a khaya (African Mahogany) backbone. Floors and both stems are laminated khaya. Full deckbeams are laminated douglas fir. Trim and rubbing strips are also khaya. Our customer opted for a self-draining cockpit, an outboard well and chose not to have a forward hatch. All surfaces have been sheathed in two coats of epoxy, with the exception of some trim which has been oiled. This was a commissioned part-build with the owner completing interior fit-out, foils, spars and rigging.
Ordering Information:Each Wee Seal is built to order, based on the customer's specifications. If you are interested in purchasing a complete boat or part-built kit, we will first ask which of the build options you would like included in your boat.
